Electronic vent selection problems
Thanks to Toadster
LO all
Finaly fixed my air vent selection problem on my 5th Gen
I was unable to select different air vents using the dash buttons and last weekend i found that tapping the selection motor would make it work.
So i was told by a couple of peops that the motor needs replacing.
So i picked-up a replacement from a breakers on tuesday and found that this one had the same symptoms as mine .
So i took the breakers yard unit apart as per the pics below.
You have to remove the plastic arm first by gently using a flat ended screwdriver to prise it from its shaft , its important to make a small mark on the shaft in black marker so you dont re-fit the arm the wrong way round.
Although i later realised that the hole cut out of the large cog is to show that the arm point in that direction
Also make a mark on the large cog so you re-fit this correclty too, i just made a mark on the right-hand side.
then lift off 2 of the plastic cogs then lift out the large cog.
You can then clip out the pcb without de-soldering anything.
I think the reason it wasn't working was a bad connection between the 3 flexible legs attached to the underside of the large cog and the copper tracks on the pcb.
So i first cleaned the surface of the pcb with a water/washing up liquid solution , then the 3 copper legs.
allowed to dry.
Then i bent the 3 legs slightly away from the underside of the cog , only very slightly though.
Then i sprayed the surface of the pcb with some switch cleaner in a can and allowed to dry.
then fitted everythin back together again.
Fitted to the car and it works a treat, i have since done the above to the unit that was already on the car, so i have a spare one.
I think the old motor was stuck in a in-between position, because i have never had so much air coming out of the vents.
I'm well chuffed as when i rang honda for the price of a replacement motor it was £135-04
So just incase anyone else is having a similar prob, thought this may help
Cheers
Toadster

For the 4g:
This job is to fix the problem with my vents not always selecting *all* the modes when the car is cold. In the summer all is fine, but as the weather gets colder, some modes randomly stop selecting until the car warms up inside.
The 4th gen mode control motor for the air vents.
The cross head screws that hold the case together also hold the mounting bracket on.
Inside, the control board is more complex than the later 5th gen version.
Not much underneath the board, just the closed gearbox and motor.
Here you can see i've cleaned up the contacts with sandpaper, you can see the other set of prongs hasn't been done yet.
I also used a small screwdriver to lift the prongs, you can see the amount i lifted them here. I've left the electrical grease on the board as that's required.
Going back together again.
Pretty quick job, few tools needed.
