Stick to original honda fluids if you can, they are NEVER poor quality.

I used ATF in my power steering system (a common thing) before I knew about Honda's sensitivity to other fluids...

ruined the hydraulic seals in the system and now I'm having to rebuild the whole thing Embarassed

Stick to the OEM fluid, it's not expensive and you can't go wrong with it. Check the drivers handbook for fluid spec. What other makes were you considering?

The hand book warns you to only use "GENUINE HONDA Power steering Fluid- V" saying ATF or other brands of PSF will damage the system.

On the other hand, for the auto gear box, it says you can use Honda Premium Formula ATF or an equivalent DEXRON II ATF. I was told by my Honda dealer that they don't make the Premium stuff anymore only Z1 (£9.45 per litre), which is specified for their newer automatics. So I'm thinking of shopping around, Halfords sell 5l of Comma ATF for £23.99.

What I would like to know, is it OK to mix different brands? Also, how difficult is it to drain / refill the whole gear box?

I wouldn't mix different brands and i wouldn't use Comma Shocked

Don't worry about the manual specified stuff, the new ATF Honda use wasn't available or invented back then, the current Honda ATF will be fine for what you want.

^+1

As said before, go for the Honda fluid. I had mine done back in Feb and they used the newer Honda stuff. I'd imagine its more advanced than the stuff from 10yrs ago.

You can only change the top 2.5 litres (approx). If you want to change the whole 7 litres (approx) you have to have a gear box refurb/rebuild apparently - around £1200!

Well the box has been out and refitted, I've used Motor Factor Dextron II Stuff now to make sure it's all good and the system will now be totally drained and refilled with Honda stuff.

I wasn't wasting 6-7 Litres of Honda ATF if the gearbox was scrap...

6 Litres to run it for 5 mins cost me £10 Razz
