Hey guys. My mate has done an engine conversion and has stuck a H22 in his civic. Things were running fine until recently. This is the post he has put up (from another forum):

"well my car decides when it wants to vtec or not

i was out in it tonight, sometimes vtec kicks in perfect and sometimes it goes over 5.5 and then limits on just over 6 like its in safe/limp mode or something.. and it goes crazy loud when it limits. i have checked the oil but thats fine.

also it will not vtec under heavy load. like if im in second it wont, i have to gently build up revs in like 3rd or 4th.. its pissin me off really because its no fun this way

anyone had this problem before?
do you think its my dizzy playing up as thats the only thing i can think of"

What do you guys reckon it could be..?

As said check the oil level, then check the small gauze filter in the vtec solenoid, if it gets clogged up with dirt it wont vtec and goes into safe/limp mode, if thats clear it could be the solenoid itself.

According to my mate, the oil level is fine and I have mentioned that it could very well be something to do with the solenoid. I'll see if I can get more info from him and ask him to try cleaning/replacing the solenoid.

does he have an oil pressure guage? does the pressure rise ok if so?

if he doesnt, get him to get one just to check that pressure is ok! thats the only thing i could suggest!

as said, get him to do his solenoid filter clean, that'l definately help if its never been done!
