How do boys and girls...been a while since I've been on, but haven't forgotten about you all!

After a trip to the MOT station I found out that both my steering rack boots had split.

Hmmm, very strange I thought as they weren't replaced long ago but they were glued up to get me through the MOT.

My steering has been acting strange for a while and has been getting quite twitchy, I finally replaced the Toyo T1S's for a set of goodyear eagle F1's hoping that would solve most of the "snatchy" steering issues.

Unfortunately the new tyres felt great but didn't solve the steering issues fully.

So I made the decision, rather than replace the rack I would do a full rebuild on the rack and pump.

I've purchased a complete seal set for the pair and i'll be getting my hands on a replacement rack and pump that I can rebuild, refurbish and then refit.

I know there has been non-genuine fluid in the system (now running genuine) but i'm losing fluid slowly and the vagueness is getting worse.

When I checked the service manual it does point to the steering gearbox as faulty, I think this is due to the non-genuine fluid degrading the seals and causing them to weep, the vagueness occurs much more when the steering system has warmed up.

Basically I'll be:

stripping the rack, replacing all seals, inspecting steering gearbox, fitting new boots, inner track rod ends and outer track rod ends

stripping the pump, replacing all seals (possibly main bearing also)

fully flushing the PAS system and filling with brand new PSF-V Honda Fluid.

Has anyone ever stripped a Prelude rack before?

It doesn't look too hard but it would be nice just to have a couple of pointers before I start, dont want to make a total pigs-ear of it and waste £50 in seals and £25 in fluid plus a s#!t load of time.

Peace out ya'll!

Cutz.

No advise on how to go about the rebuild.

However my bro took his Lude to a power steering specialist in Greenwich.

They removed the rack, stripped it, replaced all tarnished parts, and then fitted it all back as new for £360 with 2yr warrantee.

I'm gonna do that instead. Might be worth a try doing the same, leaving the pro's to it matey.

£360 for a steering rack?? Sod that man!

Inner & Outer Tie Rods: £50
Steering Rack Boots: £5
2L Honda PSF: £22
Steering rack and power steering pump rebuild kit: £47

I've got a rack and pump waiting so that's £124 for a FULLY re-built and refurbished steering rack AND power steering pump with a fully flushed hydraulic system and new fluid Wink

It will be a learning experience... I've got the service manual and a brain... I'm sure I can manage it Rolling Eyes
