My side windows were looking crap and I was going to paint them as per Stans guide. Then I thought they are rubber lets try my old trick on them.

Horrid Crying or Very sad

So I used cellulose thinners on a cloth(taking extreme care not to get it on the paintwork) and rubbed fairly hard over all the rubber. That removed all the gribbbe, grime and old polish. That took under 10 mins.

Them I wiped it all with white spirit(keeping it off the paintwork again) that removed any stickyness. 2 mins.

Then I polished it with some old cockpit black I had kicking about again a couple of mins.(I could have polished it a bit better but I had visitors turn up and I had to go and be pleasant to them)

Repeated the process on the other side. So under 30 mins in total.

The result

I will see how this weathers and might try polishing it with something else if the shine goes off to quickly.

Still 30 mins work made a hell of a difference. Its been bugging me for a long time.

Great tip! All I did was clean them and used trim wax. Will try your method!

Is the spirit really necessary though?

Probably not but I found the rubber was a bit sticky so that is why I used it.

Very interesting, not only have you actually contributed something about a Prelude for once Wink Smile But you've also done something that i also need to take care of.

I'm very interested in how this weathers, and also how it was before you used the cockpit shine.

Right now, on my test roof strip, i'm using Farecla G3 which takes a while but seems to get the desired effect.
Interesting about the Thinners and then white spirit, i can't say i had any luck with thinners when i tried it.

Dave the rubber was matt finish rather like an ordinary piece of rubber hose.

As for the thinners you have to rub it quite hard to get the clag off.

If the Cockpit shine is not durable I will have a burrow about in my garage to see what else I can use for free. Laughing

Black shoe polish is another tip I was given. As you see I don't spend money where I don't have to Laughing
