I have a decent Alpine ZR 10 inch sub in my boot and it has run off a Pioneer 175w mono amp (max I think) since the start of time. I want to upgrade the mono amp which runs to the 10" sub because even though the sub has a good sound I think its underpowered.

Basically over the next few days I will buy a new (or ebay 2nd hand) decent mono amplifier to run my sub. I am after a decent powered amp because my Alpine 10 inch sub is 300 watts RMS and 1000 watts MAX and if I decide to change the sub I will probably want to upgrade to a decent 12 inch sub probably in the 500 watts RMS range so the amp will probably have to be ok with this power also.

Apart from RMS power what do I need to look for in a monoblock amp?

I guess Frequency Response is important?

Crossover for mono amp? Can you lower the lower frequency manually on some amps instead of switching to low pass?

All in all can the peeps of the ice age division of preludeuk point me in linkage form to some good mono amps between the value of £60-£160 and then explain to me why they are a good buy.

Many thanks.

It's a good idea to look at the THD rating.

Lower is better. This gives you an idea of how clean the amp will sound, and how susceptible it is to distorting at high volume.

You also want to look for a flat frequency response ideally.

I don't really get your question about the filter. You want a low-pass filter, its cut off frequency is entirely up to personal taste.

Mon amp are the way forward on any speaker in any system. Ideally you want each speaker to have its own mono channel to eliminate crosstalk between power supplies that destroys stereo imaging.

Now with Low THD yes that is a good area to look for but Tube amplifiers have a very high THD and this distortions adds to the warmth of the bass. Basically you want an amp that can provide clean watts. If i was you i would hold out and look for a Genesis Profile Sub which wil give 350w RMS (that is underatted and the watts are very clean.) Or you can find a 2 channel amp and bridge them. (thats what im doing).

Also remember Sub efficiency is important. For example my Mcintosh Sub is rated at 91db sensitivity and only requires 175w RMS or 300w MAX. Therefore it will be just as loud as a sub with a sensitivity of 89db getting 600w.

To hear a 3db increase in volume you need to double the power.
