Bought an interior/exterior temperature monitor thing (with a clock) from Maplin for £15 delivered and basically took it apart to see what could be done. After having to resolder the bloody power connectors multiple times, and cutting the housing away and swearing when a little block that allows it to light up kept falling out, I finally ended up with that.

I removed the switch and soldered two wires to the spot that lights it up. Unfortunately it doesn't stay light permanently, so going to put a little switch somewhere to flick it on. Also going to extend the power wires to the batteries to make it easier to replace them.

Just need to fit it somewhere. Was thinking near the clock in the dash (just worried about it sticking out like a sore thumb, need to get the dash apart to have a look, can't remember what it looks like under there Laughing), or in the tweeter (driver or passenger). Need to get a spare tweeter cover to work on, don't want to go slicing if it isn't going to work!

What you think, any ideas?

Jay

Nice idea.

I have a spare tweeter cover you can have. It's pre face lift though if that matters to you?

I also have a spare temp/fuel gauge and the full length black translucent plastic cover if that's of use?

Need post facelift Sad

I need to take my dash apart and have a look at the space in that area, if I can put it there but it needs a bit of cutting I'll give you a shout Wink I'd prefer to have it in the dash as then the passenger can see the awesome-ness, but it depends on a) if it can fit and b) if you can see it through the smoked plastic.

I'll check it out tomorrow Smile Been meaning to take my dials out again as I need to check why my speedo/tacho don't dim fully!

Great idea! Cool
It would look really cool if you could blend it in to look original.

As in when you turn on the headlamps or when you rotate the dimmer?

When the headlamps are on, the dimmer works but the speedo/tacho are still slightly brighter than the fuel/temp gauges, I think its because whatever controls the brightness on the back of the gauges has twisted (I've done a lot of work back there!). I think its a variable resistor you see. I have a spare set of dials here I can plug into the power box on the right and twist the variable resistor to check. Just haven't got round to doing it.

Anyway, left the thing on all day in my room, still working when I got home so bonus, just need to fit it. Going to try and do it this weekend. And yeah pushki, going to try and mount it as flush as possible, I'd do it without the silver cover but thats needed to hold the circuit board tight against the screen in order for it to work! If its slightly loose, the digits don't appear properly (you know what its like when you push on an LCD screen).

So, off with the dash again this weekend and see where I can fit it!

J man there is loads of space behind the black pannel in the dash on the center and passenger side of the car. Why hack somthing up when it would look s#!t hot in behind the black screen? Its plastic like sunglasses.

Some thin metal strips and some carefull mounting would be perfect. Gona mount some 7" TV screens behind mine eventually so I can connect a DVD or an ipod

Oh yeah of course, I wasn't planing on cutting a hole in the smoked bit! That would ruin it. Need to find somewhere I can make it fit snugly.
