Hi guys,

I need an advice...

From couple of days I started to hear very strange banging/knocking noise from my engine...only when it is cold (especially in the morning).

I decided to check couple things

I'm checking the oil level every week and it was fine...I would say half way on the dipstick scale. I've done more than 1300miles and had to top up only 200ml - so I would say that is not the piston rings or pistons.
This knocking is more significant when I'm reeving up to 2500rpm and then when idle will reach the 2500 point and starting to drop, than this sound is really standing out.

It is hard to describe but it is like knocking with the vice with the spoon... - this sound is starting to be more metal when idle is dropping.

I'm suspecting two things:

valve clearance (please let it be this one)
or bottom of the engine crankshaft/piston rods?

Any other ideas/views what I suppose to check... car mileage 100k.

When you are reving it at 2,500, is it a constant kcocking sound? If so, I would suspect a crank...

It is more likely when it is hitting 2.5k and dropping....than I can hear it...

From what I heard or know if:

while reeving up you hear knocks and rattles it is more likely pistons

but when knocks are more significant when the revs hitting the point i.e 2.5k and than dropping to 1k than it is a crank issue.

Crank should be easy to do....

Anyone knows good/high quality parts for the engine.. I'm not even thinking of going to Honda... Laughing

If it's like a flapping sound from the top end, then it could be the cambelt auto-tensioner about to give up the ghost. If it is proper 'knocking' from the bottom end, then you've possibly spun a bearing on the crank. If this is the case, and you've been running it round for 1300 miles, then you can kiss the engine goodbye I'm afraid. Both the crank and the bearing journals on the block will be torn to shreds.

In either case, I strongly recommend that you get the car to a garage/mechanic ASAP, and get it diagnosed before you drive anywhere else in it.

If the bottom end is knocking already then it will be too late for simply replacing the bearing shells. The crank will have damage and most likely the rod journal will be at the very least scored or as is more common ovaled.

Honestly it is only knocking a bit when the engine is ice cold...than it is disappearing completely.

If a bigger job is required what exactly will need to be involved..and I assume you will know the total cost of it...done by you offcourse. Smile
