Hi all,
How you guys doing? Havent't been here for a bit
I am currently in the process of writing an essay on gaming and how it impacts the society. As you may be aware, there are some negative news that links gaming to various crimes and tragedies.
Do you think violent games or games that depict violent acts will corrupt society? Do such games somehow drive certain gamers to do something they wouldn't have done otherwise?
I am just interested to know people's general opinion on this matter. Even though you are a casual or non gamer I would still like to hear your vote on this matter.
This is not an strict statistical poll but rather an attempt at gathering people's general opinions using the internet as a medium.
Thanks for all votes offered

Not compulsory but if you have any opinions/views I would like to hear them
I know the term "social concern" is a rather wide scope but what I am trying to sample are the social concerns that could arise from games in general.
For example, Tom likes to play games so much that he rarely sees his friends and spends most of his time at home. XBox Live is his new world. Due to this, he also is gaining an unhealthy diet by surviving on energy drinks and fast food that is contributing to his deteriorating health.
I know this is a rather extreme example but that's one of the issues I am looking at. Main points are : addiction, anti social behaviour and unhealty lifestyle all that *could* be related to games or gaming in general.
It would be great if some real life examples are quoted of course as its always better to hear examples from an actual person rather than picking it up from the media.
Thanks again for the support! _________________

With regards to games making you go out and kill someone, no i don't believe playing a game will make you do that, it might give you an idea of how to do it, but you were gonna do it anyway. I can't see how a game is any different from a film and films don't get blamed as much to bad things happening.
Destroying social skills and generally bad for your health, yes i believe it does, but then i've met some good friends through playing games online, so it's not a total loss of social skills.
I play far too many games mainly cos i'm skint, if I had money i'd be out doing something lol |

I agree with Ammo completely.
They do tend to link young people and "video games" as the source of their evil tendencies, but its rubbish.
YES you can shoot people in the face, rob people, shoot someone else, knick a car, abuse the law on games etc etc, but if you are indeed swayed to do this in real life, then its obvious that these persons are already mentally unstable. Games just purely give people like this an incentive, or as you will, a 'second life' in which they confuse reality to the game.
For whatever reason though, music, television and film were all spouting death and destruction (especially TV and film) way before any games made it onto the scene. Cinema has been about violence, gun fights and drugs for a long long time.
Bad to the topic though - yes i believe that too much gaming can indeed damage your social skills, however once again, that depends on the person. Some people prefer to stay in and spend time with their games. Nothing wrong with that i guess.... Others, find a good balance between games and real life living.
In all honesty, yes games CAN make you lazy, fat & socially unaware. But since day 1, there has always been outcasts of social standing (those that prefer to be alone) and gaming is simply a past time that tends to be attractive to these people.
Games are not the problem - humans are. _________________

For some reasons there are more documented cases in the US compared to the UK. I will try to search for some sources in the UK.
Thanks for reminding me that. I guess its going to be very biased just citing examples from US in general. _________________
