what are good winter/wet tyres then? uniroyal rainsports? the standard size lude tyre is so bloody awkward to find 205/55/15 its not worth dropping down to 195 is it?

Nah, fairly standard tyre size that, no problems.

I'm thinking rainsports or similar.

205/55/15 = expensive
195/50/15 = very good prices

is it worth dropping to 195 to get better tyres im thinking uniroyal rainsports. will the garage fit smaller then manufacturer tyres?

IMO you dont want a fat tyre anyway, thin tyres are better at cutting through slush and snow.

Last year my 215/45/17 summer tyres were guff, the tread filled up with snow and slush, pretty much like slicks in the end.

hello,

got new front tyres today from kwik fit of all places.

2 x Bridgestone Turanza ER500

now i dropped sizes to 195/50/15 as they were having a deal on them so they tyres were £40.95 each all in including balancing etc was £103

if you look on their website they have loadsa deals on tyres at the mo and if you tell them about it instore or bring the printout you dont have to buy online.

no before anyone says they are too small etc i did a quick test on the way home (it started raining also)

THEY ARE AWESOME they may even match the pirelli p7000's on my 17's i came off a roundabout in the wet onto a dual carriageway and nailed at teh wrong time to see what would happen, basically second gear round the corner nail it into vtec - no understeer and no wheelspin!! that was ijn the wet god knows how good they are in the dry. obv wasnt bouncing off the limiter but for spirited driving they rock.

next up was a quick pull away in 1st nothing mad but they didnt spin and they gripped really well if you absolutley nailed away they would spin but most tyres would. for normal driving be it wet or dry these tyres are very good and very cheap for what they are

i didnt get the chance to do a proper emergency stop but i reckon it would be fairly difficult to get them to lock (non-abs) if you hammered on the brakes they would as do most but being without abs i tend not too

hope this helps if anyone is thinking of new tyres il do some more tests over the next few days and let you know.

p.s bear in mind that these tyres were fresh and had yet to bed in so the grip will only get better. may even go and get some on the rear

They're 6.5 inch rims, so yes you can run 195's on them if you wish. However, you should run a 195/60, not a 50, as the tyre wall is less when you shrink the width.

It'd be hardly noticeable, but the new tyre walls and probable stiffer construction will make it sharpen up a bit, as with the narrower tyres.

Just bare in mind that it'll knock your speedo out by nearly 6mph slower, so 70 on the speedo will be ~65 on the road, and that's on top of the speedo inaccuracy.

I might see about the 195/60's probably tomorrow and see how much difference it makes Smile

well as long as im going slower than i think i am thats good. the acceleration difference going from 17's with a 45 profile down to 15's with a 50 profile is rather noticeable its awesome i love now i need to get matching rear tyres as they are stil a 55 profile

but it handles fine with 195's
