got them yesterday and they looked confusing, so i brought to my mate (mechanic) and he had a look at my suspension.. he didnt quite understand how they would work on the stock suspension..

he mentioned something about the coil not catching on the bottom cup, therefore when turning the car, the coil would spin?!? Confused

Anyone used these before?
Can they fit to the stock suspension without any problems?
should i return them?

HELP!

Cars a 5G VTI btw!

Taken me a while to get around to do this, but hopefully it will help people trying to fit these cheap ebay coilovers.

This guide assumes that you know how to remove/refit the front and rear shocks, details of how to do that can be found in the service manual.

This is for a 4th Gen, but I assume same principals will work for the 5th gen as well.

The main problem I had is the car would sit on the bump stops on the front if they were fitted with everything they came with, so this is a work around to get the drop you want.

OK here goes.

HOW TO FIT EBAY COILOVERS

Ebay coilovers around the £60 mark, mine were labelled "JAPSPEED"

The springs are labelled F and R but just to be clear

The collars are the same for both front and rear.

I'll start off showing both front and rear together as for this bit it's the same for both.

First off, you need to strip down the shocks (See the service manual for details) and you end up with the pic below.

The red arrows are the larger rubber rings you get with the kit, put 2 on each shock, roughly where they are in the pic. These are basically spacers to stop the collars from moving once there in place. The collars are a tight fit so allow some room incase the rubbers roll down while you fit the collar.

You can now fit the collars, you have 2 options on which way round the collars can got but we opted for this way mainly because the screws being at the top stop movement better than they do at the bottom (And the screws don't sit right on the bottom)

You can see the screw holes in the pic.

Next you want another rubber ring, which you place at the top of the collar

This is to stop any dust/dirt etc getting between the collar and shock

Front and Rear collars done.

Next some alterations to the top mounts is needed, this is so that IF the spring ever becomes to lose the rubber doesn't just drop out of the top mount.

Rotate the rubber so it no longer matches up with the original stud marks

Now if you lucky this will mean that the top mount rubber is better secured and won't fall out.

BUT on mine it wasn't enough so we had to do a tiny bit of modding

You may not need to do that, but just showing you in case.

Now we can focus on the front and rears separately as they start to differ now

REARS

Rear springs are the longer ones, they should be marked with an 'R' but in case there not you know which ones they are.

First off is to fit the Rubber spring cap that comes with the kit, and fix it in place with some cable ties (Again so if the spring becomes slack everything stays where it should)

You want to try and position the cable ties at the points where there not going to get crushed by the spring compressing.

Next we can start to assemble the rear, cutting down the bump stop helps with the reduced travel your shock will have.

Pics are far better at showing how to put them together than words

Top mount fitted and rear shock complete

FRONTS

The fronts differ from the rears, as if you assemble them the same way, the shock can't travel enough and they just sit on the bump stops, doing it this way we could get the drop we wanted and the travel in the shock.

Basically the same as the rears BUT bin the Purple rubber spring cap we used.

Pic again instead of words

Fit the top mount

And your done.

NOTE: when you fit the Fronts, make sure the spring seats correctly when you lower the car down.

Before

After

Hopefully makes sense, and the pics will help anyone doing the same job.
