After spending several hundred quids on servicing, maintenance and 5 tyres recently I've been feeling a little fed up with the Prelude running costs. Having spotted an opportunity I drove a couple of miles to meet PreludeManH22 last week (good guy), with a mind to selling him my Prelude. Anyway I proudly pop the bonnet and he says "What's that squeaky noise then?" Confused

So I have a listen and it's coming from the distributor area. I put my hand on the cap and it feels like something's loose in there. There's a normal (I think), rhythmic vibration, a high-pitched quiet squeak and an irregular metallic noise too Shocked. Sounds like a little nut or something bouncing about Shocked Shocked

So I'm taking it up the garage on Monday but given that the car is running perfectly (better than ever actually), am I likely to be dropping £50 fitted for a dizzy cap and rotor arm or is the rattly looseness more likely to be a complete distributor?

Don't hold back on the bad news, having done so much on the car I'm not about to throw it away and buy something else. I'd just get another Jap coupé anyway so I'm sticking with the Prelude.

You create a thread on dizzy rascal and then wonder what fix up look sharp is all about. Laughing unless of course your being sarcastic.

No, just being dim. I've not actually listed to his music the title just occurred to me when I was posting about the skallywag distributor. Laughing

It was really weird giving someone a demo and showing them just how awesomely the car drives, I totally sold it to myself! I know an almost 18-year-old daily driver is never going to be 'finished', but recently it seemed there was never even a gap between jobs that needed doing. Crying or Very sad They say you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone, but I've found that nearly going is enough for me to realise what I have. I'm back in love with the Prelude! Laughing

I already have a list of things for the next service though. Timing belt, maybe water pump at the same time, freshly painted rocker cover would be nice, rocker cover gasket, spark plug seals, cam seals (while he's in there) and a rear engine mount from I-Tuned. Should be able to get all that organised for about £450. Shocked Only 5 months until the next service so I expect there'll be a few more things to add to that! Razz

It could just be the bearing in the dizzy running a bit dry & squeaking. Why not just take the cap off yourself and have a quick looksie? Just remember which way round the leads go (mark them up), and undo the screws on the cap to remove it. The rotor arm itself is only held on by one screw.

Also, don't go paying expensive for parts. Any motor factors can supply you with consumables at very cheap prices. A brand new TD60U distributor including cap & rotor can be picked up for £90 off Ebay for example.
