I’ve owned Preludes for about 10 years. My first was a 2nd gen’ 1.8 EX auto.
She lasted for a few months before ‘white van man’ killed her.
I drove a £400 Capri for a while after that. It was orange! (no pics sadly).
My second Prelude I bought in 2000. She was a 1990 3rd gen’ 4WS 2.0 16v manual, (50,000 miles).
A fantastic car that I kept for 8 years and clocked up nearly 60,000 miles.
Then, one day, my mate was looking for a car for himself on ebay, when we spotted this.
I had to have her!
The New Prelude
She was a lightweight BB4 1994 2.2 Si V-tec 2WS LSD freshly imported and unmodified, with 65,000 kilometres (40,000 miles) on the clock.
I didn't really know what all that meant, but she looked clean with very low mileage. That was good enough for me.
While advertised on ebay, there was some interest from members of a Prelude forum thing on the internet, so I checked the site out.
I found a very friendly, informative bunch of people with a wealth of Prelude knowledge, so I joined, lickety-split. The forum was called 'ludebehaviour'.....................................
Just kidding, it was you guys.
I won the auction and went to pick her up.
I found that the guy had been rather ‘economical’ with the truth.
The passenger side, had a few bodywork issues rather worse than the "1 or 2 little marks" quoted in the ad'.
I knocked £250 off the price, not knowing how much repairs cost these days.
My V-tec cherry burst on the drive home. _________________

The Re-vamp
As I didn’t have any service history, my first job was to have the cambelt changed and get a basic service.
She also had terrible ‘shock knock’. I’d read up about this so I knew what was required to fix it..............The Halfords repair washer technique.
I took her into Honda. They changed the cambelt, sorted the shock knock, serviced her and gave her a free health check. (all good! ).
Next to sort out was the bodywork.
I went to the Honda recommended bodyshop for dent removal & painting of the passenger side, rear bumper & wing mirrors.
They weren’t as committed to excellence as I had hoped. The blending was quite poor and they’d cracked the lacquer when pulling a small dent on the bonnet.
Here are the good bits
My next job was to prepare her for the British climate.
I cleaned, waxoyled and undersealed all four wheel arches and sprayed waxoyl into the sill box sections.
I had to replace the scrapers/door mouldings, because the old ones had deteriorated, so another expensive trip to Honda.
At that time, I’d never heard of D2Mtuning. Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
The windows had to come out anyway, so I cleaned greased and waxoyled inside both doors.
I disassembled the electric mirrors & re-greased the workings.
Meanwhile, I’m obsessively cleaning every blemish on the paintwork. (sorry, no pic’s for any of this).
Then I Went Shopping....
Front door speakers
Rear parcel shelf speakers
Pioneer head unit (MP3/WMA/USB etc.)
Momo F16 Evo gear knob
Momo leather gear gaiter
Working cupholder
3 new wiper blades
JDM wind deflectors (Yo!)
Clear side indicators
Red LED for rear fog light (converted reverse light)
Set of mudguards (thanks to Mercutio)
Plus a million $$$$$ worth of sundries
After cleaning off 14 years of dirt, I fitted the Momo gear knob and leather gear gaiter – 'classy'.
I also fitted the Pioneer head unit and the front and rear speakers, and...........I’ve now got a working cupholder.

No one will believe you about the cup holder without evidence
You just reminded me/convinced me of something with the sills. You know i'm doing mine, but i was wondering about inside the sill boxes, so yeah, gonna have to get the airline rigged to spray it inside the boxes and fill them
You've almost done as i have with all the little bits to do it up, it's all good stuff and completes the car nicely.
Your dash is quite shiny, are you seeing through the screen ok on sunny days? _________________

I just used the aerosol spray cans with a straw attached.

I've not had a problem with reflection. My windscreen is in mint condition though. _________________
